Getting your Umrah visa sorted is the first practical step in any pilgrimage plan. Without it, everything else — the flights, the hotel, the itinerary — is theoretical. And yet for many British Muslims planning Umrah for the first time, the visa process is the part that feels most unclear.
This guide covers exactly what UK pilgrims need in 2026: which type of Umrah visa applies to you, what documents you need, how much it costs, how long it takes, and the new digital requirements that have changed the process significantly in the last two years. Read it once and you will have a clear picture of what to do and in what order.
What Is an Umrah Visa?
An Umrah visa is the official travel authorisation issued by the Saudi Arabian government that permits a Muslim pilgrim to enter the Kingdom specifically to perform Umrah — the minor pilgrimage to Makkah. Without a valid Umrah visa, you cannot enter Makkah, regardless of your nationality or the strength of your UK passport.
The visa is separate from a standard Saudi tourist visa, although — as we will explain below — British passport holders now have an additional route available through the Saudi Tourist eVisa that is worth understanding before you apply.
Umrah visas are issued for a specific pilgrimage season, not permanently. They cannot be used during the Hajj season blackout period, and they have defined entry and exit windows that pilgrims must comply with.
Types of Umrah Visa Available to UK Pilgrims in 2026
There are two main routes British Muslims can use to enter Saudi Arabia for Umrah in 2026.
Traditional Umrah Visa
This is the classic pilgrimage visa, processed through a Saudi Ministry-registered Umrah travel agency in the UK. You cannot apply for this visa independently — it must be arranged through a licensed agency.
The traditional Umrah visa is single entry, typically valid for 30 days from the date of issue, and is linked to a confirmed package booking. It covers entry to Jeddah, Makkah, and Madinah. When you book through Safar-e-Kaaba, your Umrah visa is processed on your behalf as part of the package — you provide the required documentation, we do the application.
This is still the most commonly used route for UK pilgrims travelling through a travel agency, and it remains the most straightforward option for families, groups, and first-time pilgrims.
Saudi Tourist eVisa
Since 2019, British passport holders have been able to apply for a Saudi Tourist eVisa, which explicitly permits Umrah outside of the Hajj season. This visa offers significantly more flexibility than the traditional route.
The Tourist eVisa is multiple entry, valid for one year from the date of issue, and allows stays of up to 90 days per visit. It includes mandatory travel insurance as part of the fee. You apply online through the official Saudi eVisa portal without needing an agency.
The cost in 2026 is approximately £100 to £140 for British passport holders, depending on exchange rates — this includes the visa fee and the mandatory insurance element.
The Tourist eVisa suits experienced pilgrims travelling independently, solo travellers who want flexibility over their travel dates, and those combining Umrah with visiting other parts of Saudi Arabia. It is worth noting that if you are travelling through an agency package like those offered by Safar-e-Kaaba, the traditional Umrah visa is usually processed as part of your booking rather than requiring you to arrange a Tourist eVisa separately.
Documents Required for Umrah Visa UK 2026
Whether you are applying through the traditional route via your travel agency or directly for the Tourist eVisa, you will need the following documentation:
Valid UK passport — your passport must have at least six months of validity remaining from your date of arrival in Saudi Arabia, not from your application date. This distinction catches people out regularly. If your passport expires in nine months but you are travelling in four months’ time, you have five months of validity on arrival — which does not meet the six-month requirement.
Your passport must also have at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps, and it must be in good physical condition. Passports with significant water damage, torn pages, or excessive wear are routinely rejected.
Recent passport photograph — a digital photo meeting Saudi specifications: white background, full face clearly visible, neutral expression. Head coverings are permitted for religious reasons. Glasses are generally not accepted.
Meningitis ACWY vaccination certificate — this is a mandatory Saudi entry requirement for all Umrah pilgrims, strictly enforced. The vaccination must be administered at least ten days before your departure date, and you must carry the official printed certificate in your hand luggage alongside your passport. Book this through your NHS GP or a registered travel health clinic. The vaccination is valid for three to five years depending on the vaccine type used.
Confirmed accommodation booking — the Saudi authorities now require proof of a licensed, confirmed hotel booking in Makkah and Madinah as part of the visa application. This is part of the digital regulation introduced through the Nusuk platform. If you are booking a package with Safar-e-Kaaba, your accommodation confirmation is provided to you as part of your travel documents.
Confirmed return flight details — evidence of your intended entry and exit from Saudi Arabia.
For women applicants, there are specific requirements depending on age and whether a Mahram (male guardian) is travelling with them. Women over 45 may travel with an organised group without a Mahram. Women under 45 have historically been required to travel with a Mahram, though Saudi rules on this have evolved in recent years. Confirm the current requirement with your travel agency before applying, as this is an area where the rules have changed and may continue to change.
The Nusuk App — Now a Core Part of the Umrah Process
If you performed Umrah several years ago and are planning to return, the most significant practical change you will encounter is the Nusuk platform. Introduced by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, Nusuk is now the central digital system through which pilgrimage activities are managed.
UK pilgrims must register on the Nusuk app before departure. The app is used for:
Booking Rawdah permits at Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah — timed access to the area around the Prophet’s grave and pulpit. Without a permit booked through Nusuk, access is not guaranteed.
Managing Umrah permits — during peak periods, access to the Tawaf area can be managed through timed slots booked via the app.
Your eVisa alone, if travelling on the Tourist eVisa route, does not grant automatic mosque entry rights during restricted periods. Nusuk registration is required alongside the visa itself.
Download the Nusuk app from your app store before your departure. Your travel agency should assist you with registration — at Safar-e-Kaaba, we walk every pilgrim through the Nusuk setup process as part of pre-departure preparation. It takes approximately twenty minutes and is straightforward once you have your passport and booking confirmation to hand.
How Much Does an Umrah Visa Cost in 2026?
This depends on which visa type you use.
The traditional Umrah visa cost is generally absorbed into your package price when booking through a UK agency. At Safar-e-Kaaba, visa processing is included in all our Umrah Packages UK — you will not receive a separate bill for it. Some agencies charge it separately at £80 to £150, so always confirm whether it is included before paying a deposit.
The Saudi Tourist eVisa costs approximately £100 to £140 for UK passport holders as a direct application. This includes the mandatory travel insurance element — you cannot obtain the eVisa without insurance being issued alongside it.
How Long Does Umrah Visa Processing Take?
The traditional Umrah visa processed through a registered agency typically takes between three and seven working days once all documentation is submitted correctly. This processing time can extend during peak demand periods — particularly in the months before Ramadan and during busy school holiday windows.
The Saudi Tourist eVisa, applied for directly online, typically receives a response within twenty-four to seventy-two hours, with some applications approved almost instantly. This faster turnaround is one of its genuine advantages for pilgrims who have confirmed travel plans but need the visa quickly.
Regardless of which route you take, do not leave visa processing to the last week before travel. Allow a minimum of two to three weeks to account for any documentation queries or processing delays.
Common Umrah Visa Mistakes UK Pilgrims Make
Several straightforward errors cause Umrah visa applications to be delayed or rejected. These are the most common:
Passport validity miscalculation — calculating six months from the application date rather than the arrival date. Always count from when your feet touch Saudi soil.
Name mismatch — even minor spelling differences between your visa application and your passport name cause rejections. Copy your name exactly as it appears in your passport, including middle names if they are in the document.
Late application during Hajj season — the Umrah visa issuance window closes several weeks before Hajj begins. In 2026, the cutoff for traditional Umrah visa issuance was in late March. Do not assume you can apply right up to your travel date without checking the seasonal calendar.
No Nusuk registration — having your visa approved does not mean your Nusuk registration is complete. These are two separate processes and both need to be done before departure.
Using an unlicensed agent — Umrah visas must be processed through agencies certified by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. Using an unlicensed operator risks visa rejection and gives you no consumer protection if something goes wrong.
Visa for Umrah from Different UK Departure Cities
The visa process itself does not change depending on where in the UK you depart from. Whether you are flying from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bradford, Glasgow, or Edinburgh, the same visa documentation and process applies.
What does vary by city is the practical logistics of vaccination — some areas have better NHS GP availability for the meningitis jab than others. If you are in an area with longer GP appointment wait times, book your vaccination appointment as soon as you confirm your travel dates.
Summer 2026 Visa Window — What Is Open Right Now
As of June 2026, the Hajj season has concluded and Saudi Arabia has reopened the Umrah visa issuance window for the post-Hajj period. This means:
Umrah visas are currently being issued for summer and autumn 2026 travel. July Umrah Packages, August Umrah Packages, September Umrah Packages, and October Umrah Packages are all available and visa processing is operating normally.
